Brain metabolism during fasting.
Catheterization of cerebral vessels in three obese patients undergoing 5-6 wk of starvation demonstrated that beta-hydroxybutyrate and acetoacetate replaced glucose as the predominant fuel for brain metabolism. A strikingly low respiratory quotient was also observed, suggesting a carboxylation mechanism as a means of disposing of some of the carbon of the consumed substrates.

These studies were conducted to understand the relationship between measures of systemic free fatty acid (FFA) reesterification and regional FFA, glycerol, and triglyceride metabolism during fasting. Indirect calorimetry was used to measure fatty acid oxidation in six men after a 60-h fast. Systemic and regional (splanchnic, renal, and leg) FFA ([(3)H]palmitate) and glycerol ([(3)H]glycerol) ki...
متن کاملMetabolism of normothermic woodchucks during prolonged fasting.
The energy metabolism of hibernators has not been characterized for normothermic fasting, and our goal was to quantify oxidative fuel selection of non-hibernating woodchucks Marmota monax during prolonged food deprivation. Indirect calorimetry and nitrogen excretion measurements were used to assess changes in metabolic rate (VO2), fuel selection and composition of nitrogen wastes, as well as se...
متن کاملEndocrine Regulation of Amino Acid and Protein Metabolism during Fasting *
The concept of the dynamic state of the body constituents is basic to an understanding not only of those processes which maintain the constancy of body composition, but also of those which are concerned with the phenomenon of growth. It is evident from the work of Schoenheimer' and his colleagues that the amount of protein in the animal body is determined by the rates of protein synthesis and b...
متن کاملA Study of Metabolism during Fasting in Hypnotic Sleep
Frank Sohn, on whom the following observations were made, was a hypnotic subject of Mr. Santanelli, a professional hypnotist. The boy had become so subjective that Mr. Santanelli proposed to keep him in a continuous hypnotic sleep for a week, without food or drink, and to use the seven-days sleeper as an additional attraction for his nightly exhibitions of hypnotism. Only two days before the ex...
